Horizon Europe’s 2022 Soil Mission Offers €95 Million in Cash Grant Funding

Horizon Europe’s 2022 Soil Mission is now open and offers: €95 million in cash grant funding for businesses investing in healthy soils.

Who can apply?

The funding competition is open to any business based in the European Union (EU) member states or associated member states (including the UK), that exhibit one of the following 8 mission objectives within their Research & Development (R&D) project:

  1. Reduce desertification
  2. Conserve soil organic carbon stocks
  3. Stop soil sealing and increase re-use of urban soils
  4. Reduce soil pollution and enhance restoration
  5. Prevent erosion
  6. Improve soil structure to enhance soil biodiversity
  7. Reduce the EU global footprint on soils
  8. Improve soil literacy in society

When is the deadline?

Applications for this call will close on 27th September 2022.

What will it fund?

The main goal of the Mission, ‘A Soil Deal for Europe ,’ is to accelerate the European Commission’s (EC) goal of protecting and restoring the majority of soils by 2030. The EC is looking for innovations that shed light on various approaches for land decontamination and reuse, and how to implement carbon-farming practices.

  1. Innovations for soil improvements and bio-waste (up to €6,000,000 in funding)
  2. Building the mission's knowledge repository and advancing the European Soil Observatory (up to €14,000,000 in funding)
  3. Foster soil education across society (up to €16,000,000 in funding)
  4. Remediation strategies, methods and financial models for decontamination and reuse of land in urban and rural areas (up to €21,000,000 in funding)
  5. Citizen science for soil health (up to €14,000,000 in funding)
  6. Improving food systems sustainability and soil health with food processing residues (up to €3,000,000 in funding)
  7. Soil biodiversity and its contribution to ecosystem services (up to €6,000,000 in funding)
  8. Monitoring, reporting and verification of soil carbon and greenhouse gases balance (no funding budget)
  9. Network on carbon farming for agricultural and forest soils (up to €6,000,000 in funding)
  10. Framework Partnership Agreement (FPA) for a Living Lab network support structure (up to €9,000,000 in funding)
