At the end of June 2022 the new Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE-JU) announced a €2 billion partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC), funding projects with cash grants which advance the competitive circular bio-based industries in Europe.
The CBE-JU programme builds on its predecessor, the Bio-based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU), which ended in 2020, and will follow the same rules of Horizon Europe (Europe’s largest research and innovation programme-€95.5bn over 7 years).

The main goal of this new CBE-JU is to make a positive shift from non-renewable fossil based raw materials and minerals to circular bio-based production processes which is essential for Europe to meet its climate targets (European Green Deal).
To do so will require strong, resource-efficient and competitive bio-based industries which can be enabled through production of renewable bio-based products from waste or biomass in a sustainable circular way. This will contribute to the 2050 climate neutrality target, creation of green jobs and sustainable economic growth of Member States of Europe.
The CBE-JU programme will involve all stakeholders from the bio-based industries – academics, industrialists, farmers, regulatory experts, politicians and the general public. The funding scheme will accelerate sustainable innovation, encourage market deployment of new and developed technologies and will pave the way for future incentives and investments in sustainable circular bio-based initiatives.
To achieve the goal of advancement of a competitive bioeconomy in Europe, the 2022 programme announced in June will fund projects developing innovative and sustainable bio-based solutions focused on feedstock, processing, products and cross-cutting themes on communication and environmental sustainability.
There are 12 topics of interest in the 2022 programme with a total indicative budget of €120 million all with a deadline of 22 September 2022.
CBE JU has categorized these topics into three types of actions:
